FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to register for classes?

No, Yoga Mala is a drop-in studio, so that students may come to any class on the schedule and participate. Any pre-registered sessions will be noted separately.

How often should I take yoga class?

As often as you like!

Should I eat before class?

If possible, it is best to not eat- or try to wait about 2 1/2 hours after eating.

I am new to yoga. Where do I begin?

Yoga Mala offers classes of a variety of different styles. Yin is more gentle and great for new students. If you would like to try a more active style Sattva, Ashtanga Elements, Flow and Mysore are all appropriate.

Which Classes can I expect to be the most active/ challenging?

It is recommended that you try a Sattva or Ashtanga Elements classes before attending a Sattva Intermediate or an Ashtanga Full Primary class. However, in all classes you are welcome- please be aware that you can modify or take rests as you need to.

I am not flexible. Can I practice yoga?

Absolutely! We come to class to learn, over time- flexibility, strength and balance will all come.

Do I need to make a reservation?

No. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before class is scheduled to start.

What should I wear? What should I bring?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows for active movement. Try to avoid wearing very baggy clothes as they can get in the way as you move during class. If you have a yoga mat, please bring it with you. If not, we rent yoga mats for $2 as well as sell them. There is water available, please bring a bottle to fill. Support your environment!!

Do I need a yoga mat?

If you have one, bring it. If not, we rent for $2.

I have an injury or illness. Can I safely practice yoga?

PLEASE let your instructor know of any injuries, illnesses or limitations you may have so he or she can offer modifications and advice where appropriate. Please note that some injuries and illnesses require medical attention. It’s important to consult a doctor before attempting any strenuous exercise.

Can I practice Yoga If I'm Pregnant?

We can recommend Yin Yoga classes at all stages of your pregnancy. Yin. Yoginis that have an already established active practice at Yoga Mala can continue to practice regularly, please just make the staff aware of your news. If you do not regularly practice active yoga and would like to start, please contact Yoga Mala staff to receive information on what would be best for you. As always, consult your doctor!!

Please refrain from wearing perfume or heavy scents to class.
